Uhuru Dancers,
Inc. (Uhuru , which is Kiswahili for freedom), a community based nonprofit
501-(c)3 organization, has been empowering the Metropolitan Atlanta community
through cultural dance, song, lectures- demonstrations, and workshops since
1989. Founded by Toni Young, the group began with several dancers who had
previously been members of other dance groups. Four of the core dancers were
Toni Young the Artistic Director, Shaheedah Enahora, Tina Scoop, and Celeste
Anthony.
Uhuru is the oldest dance company in the Metro Atlanta area. At least 100 members have passed through the ranks of Uhuru in its 15 years of operation. Some are dancing abroad and performing with other professional companies, and some are teaching dance classes or have established dance companies of their own.
To further enrich our knowledge of African dance and culture, the company traveled to Senegal and the Gambia, West Africa in 1995. During the trip, the members took dance classes and visited traditional villages and while there gathered cultural and historical information.
Audiences of all
sizes and types have enjoyed Uhuru’s performances. Some of these include;
100 Black Men of Decatur, Cultural Olympiad/Celebrate Africa, World of Indigenous
people, the Carter Center, Fernbank Science Center and Museum, Morehouse College,
Peace Corp of Atlanta, The Atlanta Hawks, Decatur Arts Festival, Delta Sigma
Theta Sorority, local televisions new shows, private weddings, and a host
of public and private schools and organizations.
We understand the
importance of preserving traditional African dance, and have taught from the
standpoint of being culturally and traditionally authentic, as well as entertaining.
Some of Uhuru ’s consultants have come to us from Senegal, Guinea, Ghana,
Nigeria, the Gambia, South Africa and the Congo.
Often performing with Uhuru is Watoto Uhuru (Children of Freedom), a dance and drum group comprised of boys and girls ages 3-18. This group, which was also founded and directed by Toni Young, gives youth an opportunity to channel their energies in a positive direction, as well as teaching responsibility, discipline, and self esteem. Watoto has performed throughout the Georgia area, made television appearances, and won talent competitions. Upon graduating from Watoto Uhuru, members are invited to become members of the adult company.
